Cop handcuffs teen son as ‘scare tactic’ and gets felony charges, Indiana police say
An Indiana police officer is accused of handcuffing his teenage son and driving him to jail, officials say.
Now he’s charged with two felonies.
Timothy Hayes Jr., a reserve officer in the Southport Police Department, handcuffed his 15-year-old son and left him in an intake holding area at the police station for about half an hour, according to Indiana State Police.
He then drove the handcuffed teenager to the Marion County Jail and parked in a spot for police officers, officials said.
However, Hayes didn’t take his son into the jail and they instead went home to Franklin, police said.
A teacher at Franklin High School learned of the incident in January and reported it to the Indiana Department of Child Services.
After an investigation by Indiana State Police, Hayes turn himself in to Marion County Jail on Tuesday. He’s on administrative leave during an internal investigation at the Southport Police Department, officials said.
Hayes was charged with criminal confinement and neglect of a dependent.
