Sex trafficking survivor released in Ohio after Kim Kardashian spotlights murder case
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Friday commuted the sentence of Alexis Martin, a sex trafficking survivor whose murder case was spotlighted by Kim Kardashian West.
The governor announced Martin, 22, who went to prison at 17, will be released to supervision in a group home during a news conference.
“The facts of her case are particularly, particularly unique,” DeWine said.
Martin was accused of plotting a robbery that ended in the death of her trafficker at age 15, The Columbus Dispatch reported.
“Prosecutors had argued she helped plot the robbery and was culpable in the murder despite never pulling the trigger,” the newspaper reported.
Kardashian West featured the case in her Oxygen TV show “Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project.” The show revealed that Martin earned a GED, dog training certificate and led a group for sex trafficking survivors, the Associated Press reported.
The reality TV star applauded the governor’s decision on Twitter.
“This is a brilliant young person who gets to live her life,” Sasha Naiman, a lawyer for the nonprofit Ohio Justice & Policy Center who has worked on the case, told the Cincinnati Enquirer.
