Trump’s plan for Tulsa rally a ‘welcome home’ to white supremacists, Kamala Harris says
A political rally planned by President Donald Trump in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Juneteenth amounts to “a welcome home party” for white supremacists, says Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.
“This isn’t just a wink to white supremacists — he’s throwing them a welcome home party,” Harris, also frequently mentioned as a potential vice presidential candidate, wrote on Twitter.
Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated by African Americans and others on June 19, marking the end of slavery in the United States, according to the Los Angeles Times.
In 1921, Tulsa was the site of a massacre of African Americans and the destruction of an entire black neighborhood, the publication reported. A re-creation of the events in the HBO series “Watchmen” recently brought the violence back to prominence.
Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, called the decision to host a rally in Tulsa on Juneteenth a “slap in the face to black people,” NBC News reported.
But White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany called Juneteenth a “meaningful day” to Trump and said the African American community is “near and dear” to the president’s heart, according to the network.
