Some Children’s Robitussin and Children’s Dimetapp got recalled. Learn why here

Two lots of Children’s Robitussin Honey Cough and Chest Congestion DM and one lot of Children’s Dimetapp Cold and Cough got recalled Thursday because GSK Healthcare worries about kids being overdosed.

Or, put another way, GSK is worried about parents and guardians not paying attention and kids paying the price.

The actual medicine in the bottles is fine. But the dosing cups in the recalled lots don’t have the correct graduations on them. There’s no 5 mL line or 10 mL line on either, only a line for a 20 mL dose.

GSK’s FDA-posted recall notice states, “There is a potential risk of accidental overdose if caregivers dispensing the syrup do not notice the discrepancies between the graduations printed on the dosing cups and the indicated amounts to be administered.”

Listed possible consequences of overdoses include “psychotic behavior;” seizures; hallucinations; both a drop in energy, heart rate and breathing rate and a rise in energy, with jumps in blood pressure, heart rate and breath rate; bad coordination; “severe dizziness or drowsiness;” stomachaches; vomiting; and diarrhea.

The recalled Robitussin comes in 4-ounce bottles with lot Nos. 02177 and 02178, expiring January 2022. The recalled Dimetapp comes in 8-ounce bottles, lot No. CL8292, expiring September 2021. They were distributed nationwide Feb. 5 through June 3.

Consumers who have dosing cups with the missing markers can use the medicine. Anyone with the recalled lots can return the medicine package to the store for a full refund. Those with questions about the recall can call 800-762-4675, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time.

To report a problem, call the above number and report it to the FDA online at its MedWatch site or by calling 800-332-1088.
