1-year-old dies from COVID-19, becomes youngest virus victim in Georgia, officials say
A 1-year-old boy has died due to the coronavirus in Georgia, according to data from the state health agency.
The Cobb County baby is the state’s youngest COVID-19 victim as of Aug. 28.
Little information is available, but according to the Georgia Department of Public Health, the infant had at least one underlying condition.
Four other children in Georgia have died as a result of the virus, according to DPH.
A 7-year-old Chatham County boy died from the virus earlier this month, McClatchy News reported. He had no underlying conditions.
A 14-year-old girl, and two boys, 15 and 17, have also died from the coronavirus. All three had other pre-existing health issues.
Nationwide, 29 children younger than 4 years old have died from COVID-19, and 65 between 5 and 18 years of age, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show.
Coronavirus infections among children of all ages is increasing, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, climbing more than 20% since the start of August, McClatchy News reported.
From Aug. 6 to Aug. 20, positive cases in children jumped from 358,469 to 432,629.
Georgia has had 265,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and 5,400 deaths as of Aug. 28, according to state health data.
In Cobb County, population 790,000, there have been 387 reported deaths since the start of the pandemic, 16,630 total cases, and 1,797 cases over the last two weeks.
