Longtime Georgia officer dies after on-duty emergency. ‘His presence is irreplaceable’
A longtime police officer had a passion for serving his community and leading his team, Georgia officials said.
Lt. Joel Ruff was on the Roswell police force for more than two decades when officers said he had an on-duty medical emergency. He died on Feb. 3.
“The joy and pride he found in leading his men and women was infectious, and there was nothing he would not do or give of himself to see them succeed,” the Roswell Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. “His presence is irreplaceable, and his memory unforgettable.”
Ruff is remembered as a passionate employee of his department, based roughly 25 miles north of Atlanta. He had been on the job for about 23 years and most recently worked as a watch commander for a patrol squad.
“Before he ever pinned on his first badge, Lt. Ruff knew in his heart that service to our Roswell community was his calling,” his department said.
After the sudden loss, Georgia first responders took to social media to mourn and express their condolences.
“Our hearts are heavy and we will uplift the RSPD, Lieutenant Ruff’s family, and the Roswell Community in our thoughts and prayers,” the Johns Creek Police Department wrote on Facebook.
The Marietta Police Department commented: “Sincere condolences from everyone at MPD. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for your officers and civilian staff.”
The Roswell Police Department in its Facebook post didn’t share Ruff’s age or give specifics about his medical emergency.
