Dog missing for 24 hours found trapped in a sinkhole in Illinois. Watch the rescue
A dog in Illinois was trapped for nearly a day in a sinkhole before firefighters rescued her, officials said.
A video posted by Streator Animal Control shows the firefighters rescuing the scared and muddy pup, who was discovered by a dog named Wrigley on a walk with their owner on Feb. 12.
The golden retriever, Macy, was missing for nearly 24 hours, WEEK reported.
In the video, the man who discovered Macy said he heard her growl and bark from inside the hole.
The video shows the fire department attempting to rescue Macy from the narrow sinkhole as her head peaked out. The 11-year-old dog could not jump out herself, so officers pulled her out using a harness.
Macy was excited to be free, and jumped around to greet her rescuers. Her paws and tail were drenched in mud from the sinkhole.
“Kudos Streator Fire Department and to the doggo that alerted that Macy was in the hole,” Animal Control wrote on Facebook. “Again please stay away from Marilla today until they get it secure. Streator is built on mines.”
Macy was returned to her family and clearly enjoys her surroundings much more than in the sinkhole.
Streator is 81 miles southwest from Chicago.
