‘Special’ dolphin Helen dies at 33, San Antonio SeaWorld says. ‘Part of our family’
A beloved resident of the SeaWorld in Texas has died, the company announced.
“Helen, a Pacific white-sided dolphin estimated to be 33 years old, passed away at SeaWorld San Antonio on March 19,” an April 7 news release said.
Helen’s cause of death will be determined by a necropsy by a SeaWorld veterinary pathology team.
The dolphin was rescued back in 1996 off the coast of Japan when she became stuck in a fishing net, the release said.
Helen was deemed “non-releasable” because she was missing much of her pectoral flippers from being stuck in the fishing net, SeaWorld said.
She arrived at the San Antonio SeaWorld in April 2021 from the Vancouver Aquarium, about a year before her death.
“She was a special part of our family here in San Antonio and will be missed by our team of dedicated care givers and the many guests that came to see her at our park,” SeaWorld said.
