A driver hit and killed a 300-pound bear on a California freeway, police told news outlets.

The driver of a black Toyota Highlander hit the bear near the westbound 210 Freeway connector in Irwindale, about 23 miles east of Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol told KTLA.

The collision occurred at about 4 a.m. Monday, June 6. It shattered the SUV’s windshield, according to FOX LA.

The bear was removed from the freeway on a tow truck, California Highway Patrol Officer Ramon Kendricks told the Los Angeles Times.

Local news outlets did not report any other injuries. Several other drivers told California Highway Patrol they swerved to avoid hitting the bear, according to KTLA.

California Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for information.
