Two people fell off of a jet ski in Lake Mead, and one of them vanished, officials said.

Officials are searching for a woman Thursday, June 30, at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the National Park Service said.

At about 6:15 a.m., officials received an alert that two people fell off a jet ski near the reservoir’s Boulder Islands.

“One individual, a male, has been found while the second individual, a female, has not been seen since going into the water,” officials said in a news release. “Neither were wearing life jackets.”

Officials are investigating the incident. The woman’s identity was not publicly disclosed.

The search comes weeks after a Lake Mead boater died. On Saturday, June 18, the boater drowned over Father’s Day weekend as two others swam to shore, officials said.

The man was boating at the lake’s South Cove when a strong gust of wind caused the boat to start sinking, the National Park Service said.

“National Park Service rangers received reports of a tri-hull vessel approximately 15 feet long taking on water over the bow due to high winds,” park rangers said in a news release. “Winds on Saturday were reportedly between 23 – 28 mph with gusts as high as 36 – 40 mph out on the lake.”

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the U.S., according to the National Park Service. It encompasses more than 750 miles of shoreline. In 2021, more than 7.6 million people visited the recreation area.
