Parents join high school football game brawl, California cops say. Two adults arrested
A California high school football game was cut short for some and two were arrested after a brawl broke out near the entrance/exit gate, police say.
A fight erupted involving 20 juveniles at the Windsor High School football game on Friday, Aug. 26, at about 8:05 p.m., according to a news release from the Windsor Police Department. Some parents then joined the brawl, police said.
Deputies went to the scene after multiple 911 calls said a group of 20-30 people were fighting with bats and threatening to shoot one another, according to the news release.
After deputies arrived, many of the people involved dispersed, police said. It was later determined that half the juveniles had come to seek retribution for an initial fight, according to the news release. Authorities believe the incident was gang-related.
“The football players didn’t know what was going on or that it was a big incident,” Brian Williams, Windsor High School’s principal, told The Press Democrat. “They were pretty focused on the game.”
Two teens were sent to a local hospital for a laceration to the head and a leg injury, according to the news release. Two adults involved were arrested on battery charges and booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
“It was an unfortunate event at what should have been a great season opener with a decisive win over Mt. Tam. When the incident occurred, our Campus Security was able to quickly alert our School Resource Officer who radioed for backup. Campus Security, our SRO, and site admin worked to defuse the situation. Windsor PD arrived on scene within minutes and quickly secured the area. We are relieved that there were no weapons or serious injuries occurred while on campus. We have not received any information about the subsequent event, but we hope everyone is safe,” Windsor High School said, according to KRON4.
The Windsor Police Department is investigating the incident. If you have any information, contact the department at 707-565-2121.
Windsor is about 65 miles northwest of San Francisco.
