A woman went weak in the knees after a venture to make a ham sandwich ended in a massive lottery win.

Susan Smith, who lives in Covington, went to buy some ham and cheese at the Kroger in Clifton Forge to make a sandwich and decided to pick up a lottery ticket while she was there, she told lottery officials.

The Print n’ Play X the Money ticket looked like a winner, and the grocery clerk told her to take it to a Virginia Lottery customer service center, officials said in a Nov. 1 news release.

There, they told her she had won $250,000.

“I almost fell on the floor!” she told lottery officials. “I had to sit down. My knees got weak!”

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 480,000, according to the Virginia Lottery.

Clifton Forge is about 50 miles north of Roanoke.
