A 29-year-old man plunged through ice on a frigid Alaska river and was stranded for nearly five hours, troopers said.

The man had been snowmobiling with a group when he fell through the ice at 3:43 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the Knik River, the Alaska State Troopers said in a news release.

Temperatures reached zero degrees that day and went as low as minus 6 degrees, according to AccuWeather.

When he fell through the ice, he lost his snowmachine in the water and became separated from his group “on an ice island,” troopers said.

A person from his group, along with some good Samaritans, stayed near the man to watch him until rescuers could get to him, troopers said.

He was stranded on the ice chunk until 8:28 p.m., troopers said.

The man refused medical treatment when he was rescued, troopers said.
