Angler finds woman’s body under a frozen pond in Rhode Island, officials say
An angler spotted a woman’s body underneath a frozen pond in Rhode Island on Wednesday, Dec. 21, state officials said.
Police in Coventry, a town about 20 miles southwest of Providence, called the state’s Department of Environmental Management (DEM) shortly after 9 a.m. to report that an angler had come across a body at Carbuncle Pond, DEM spokesman Michael Healey told McClatchy News in an email.
The body was found under the ice near a fishing dock, Healey said.
The medical examiner arrived at the scene, a wooded area marked off with caution tape, at about noon, according to WPRI. There was a “heavy police presence” in the area.
“The incident is suspicious and the Rhode Island State Police have taken this case,” Healey said, adding that DEM initially responded because the pond is in its jurisdiction.
State police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.
The identity of the woman has not been released.
