Searchers found an exhausted man treading water after two kayaks capsized on stormy Lake Havasu, but a second was found dead, Arizona officials reported.

The two kayaks flipped in the middle of the lake on Tuesday, Dec. 27, during a family outing, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Exhausted and cold after some time in the water, one of the two men tried to swim for shore but could not find it in the rain, wind and darkness, sheriff’s officials said.

Searchers responding to reports of someone shouting for help rescued the man, who declined to go to a hospital, the release said.

A search by boats and on shore began for the second kayaker, sheriff’s officials said. Neither man was wearing a life jacket.

Searchers recovered the body of Larry Lee Curtis, 55, of Holbrook, from the lake at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, the release said.

Lake Havasu is a reservoir formed by Parker Dam on the Colorado River on the border of Arizona and California.
