A painter was seriously burned when the lift he was riding touched power lines and caught fire, South Carolina police said.

A man painting an apartment building was seriously burned when the arm of the lift he was riding touched power lines and caught fire, according to South Carolina police.

Two workers were on the lift at an apartment building in Greenville when caught fire just before 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 19, Greenville police Sgt. Johnathan Bragg said in a statement.

One worker was “rendered unconscious” on the lift until rescuers could cut power and bring him down, Bragg wrote.

The other worker jumped from the lift onto a nearby balcony, he wrote.

Once the unconscious man was rescued, he was airlifted to a burn unit, according to Bragg.

Bragg did not provide information on his condition.

Lifts are pieces of equipment used to help workers reach high elevations.

Greenville is about 100 miles northwest of Columbia.
