Bathroom stalls labeled ‘colored’ and ‘white’ in video. Missouri school investigating
A video showing a racist message on bathroom stalls at a high school prompted Missouri school officials to investigate, the district said.
The video showed two bathroom stalls at Eureka High School labeled “Colored toilet” and “White toilet,” Rockwood School District told McClatchy News on Monday, Feb. 6. The video was posted to a private group on social media and brought to the attention of school officials last week.
The labels “appeared to have been printed using a label maker,” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
After learning about the video, school officials in Eureka began investigating. By the time they checked the toilets, the labels “were no longer on any bathroom doors,” the district said. It’s unclear how long the labels were posted.
“The video has since been taken down, and the student who posted it has been identified,” according to the statement.
School officials said the student will face disciplinary consequences but did not provide specifics.
The Rockwood Equity Parent Advisory Council did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment on Feb. 6.
“Actions and speech that degrade an individual’s human dignity have no place in our schools and fly in the face of the work we do every day to promote a culture of understanding, respect and kindness,” school officials said. “We take them very seriously, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
Eureka is about 30 miles southwest of St. Louis.
