Riveting video shows captain’s rescue from ship miles off Louisiana coast

A captain was medevacked from a ship miles off the Louisiana coast, Coast Guard officials say.

New Orleans Coast Guard officers responded to the Peridot the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 6, after crew members called and said their captain was experiencing dizziness and chest pain, according to a Coast Guard news release.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to the ship, which was about four miles offshore in Southwest Pass, a channel at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

When they arrived, a Coast Guard crew member went down to the ship. The crew then sent a stretcher down and hoisted the captain into their helicopter, a video shows. The Coast Guard member was hoisted from the ship after the captain.

The captain was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans, officials said. He was last reported to be in stable condition.

Southwest Pass is in Plaquemines Parish, about 70 miles southeast of New Orleans.
