Five people are dead after a wreck in Georgia, deputies say.

Newton County deputies said a van and pickup truck collided head-on around 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, WSB reported. All five people in the van died at the scene and the pickup truck driver is hospitalized.

“We haven’t had a deadly accident like this, with five occupants,” Sgt. Jack Redlinger told 11Alive. “It’s been pretty devastating to everybody on the scene.”

Redlinger told the outlet no children were involved in the crash that occurred on State Route 142 in Covington.

After the collision, the van went up in flames, a witness told WAGA.

“There wasn’t an inch of that van that wasn’t on fire,” Greg Barlow told the outlet. “The thud I heard was like there was no brakes. It wasn’t a screech, it was a direct hit.”

Identities of the victims have not been released, officials told 11Alive.

It was raining at the time of the accident, but investigators have not determined if that played a role in the crash, WSB reported.

Newton County is about 40 miles southeast of Atlanta.
