Rescuer swims a half-mile to save family on capsized kayaks, California officials say

A rescuer swam more than half a mile to assist a family of four after two kayaks capsized in San Francisco Bay, California firefighters reported.

Two adults and two children were picked up by rescue boats after the rescue swimmer reached them, the San Francisco Fire Department said in a series of Twitter posts.

Their kayaks capsized in choppy water and windy conditions at 2:55 p.m. Monday, May 29, about 300 yards from Candlestick Point, firefighters said.

The two adults were unhurt but the two children were taken to a hospital to be treated for hypothermia, firefighters said.

“We are thankful that this family is safe,” firefighters wrote on Twitter.
