17-year-old and his mom killed when train plows into their car, Georgia troopers say
A 17-year-old and his mother were killed in a crash with an oncoming train, Georgia troopers say.
The deadly collision happened at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 20, along State Route 159 in Wilcox County, according to Georgia State Patrol.
A 2016 Kia Optima was headed south and crossed a marked railroad crossing that had its safety arms “activated and lowered,” troopers said in a preliminary report.
“In addition, the red flashing lights were active, illuminated, and flashing,” the report said.
The driver steered the car around the arms and onto the tracks, where it was struck by a CSX freightliner, according to the report. The train hit the car on the passenger’s side, killing two people inside, troopers said.
The victims were identified as Dallas Corbin Dozier, 17, of Hawkinsville and his mother, Brandy Elizabeth Drinnon, 34, of Cordele, according to the report and Drinnon’s obituary.
Both were thrown from the car, WALB reported, citing Wilcox County sheriff’s deputies. Troopers said Dozier was driving at the time of the crash.
The teen was a student at Hawkinsville High School and enjoyed gaming, according to his obituary.
“All that knew him speaks of the well (mannered) young man that he was,” it reads.
Brandy Drinnon was a self-employed tattoo artist who loved drawing, listening to music, fishing and going to the beach with her family, her obituary reads.
Doziers’ memorial service was held July 23, and his mother’s is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25.
The crash remains under investigation.
Wilcox County is about 150 miles southeast of Atlanta.
