A man accidentally shot himself in the leg and then crashed his car as he drove to a hospital in Oregon, police said.

The man returned to his apartment after going shooting with a friend on Tuesday, Aug. 8, the Bend Police Department said in an Aug. 10 news release.

The two drank bourbon and cleaned their guns, police said.

That’s when the man accidentally fired his weapon into his thigh, police said.

He tried to drive himself to the hospital but became unconscious and crashed into a pillar at a parking garage near the hospital at about 10:45 p.m., police said.

His friend was with him at the time and called for help.

The man was lying on the ground as a security worker tried to help him, and an officer applied a tourniquet to his injury.

An ambulance then took the man to the hospital’s emergency room, police said.

Bend is in Central Oregon, about 130 miles east of Eugene.
