A 3-year-old child died after a pickup truck driver went through a stop sign in South Carolina, officials said.

Four people, including the driver, went to the hospital for medical care after the crash on Sunday, Oct. 8, the S.C. Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Now, the person accused of being behind the wheel of the pickup is charged with reckless homicide and “no driver’s license, second offense.” Troopers identified him as 25-year-old Gabriel Arteaga-Arteaga of Spartanburg County, who didn’t have attorney information listed in online court records.

Highway patrol said Arteaga-Arteaga was at an intersection when he “failed to yield” at the stop sign. His pickup hit the side of a Cadillac SUV, which had been traveling on U.S. Highway 76, roughly 35 miles southeast of Greenville.

The 3-year-old, who was in the backseat of the Cadillac, died at the scene. The child was identified as Madison A. Hines of Gray Court, the Laurens County Coroner’s Office told WHNS and WSPA.

Arteaga-Arteaga and three people from Cadillac were injured in the crash. A passenger in the pickup truck wasn’t hurt, officials said.

Arteaga-Arteaga was arrested and booked into jail, Master Trooper Brandon Bolt told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Oct. 12.
