A lottery player from Maryland had won a few dollars on scratch-off tickets in the past but “nothing like this,” he told officials.

He just won a $100,000 jackpot, the Maryland Lottery announced Jan. 22.

The Caroline County man said all his winnings will go toward his kids.

“I have a daughter in college and another one on her heels,” he told lottery officials.

The lucky winner paid $30 for the $100,000 Ca$h scratch-off ticket at a liquor store in Denton. He doesn’t play often, just when the mood strikes him “every once in a while,” he told lottery officials.

“It’s a joy doing it,” he said.

His brother had won big a few years ago, he told lottery officials, and now it was his turn.

The liquor store where he bought the ticket will receive a $1,000 bonus. After the liquor store sold the winning ticket, 57 top prizes were left in the $100,000 Ca$h game, which debuted in September.

Denton is on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, about 70 miles southeast of Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
