A skier was killed when they veered off a challenging route and slammed into a tree at an Arizona resort, deputies said.

Rescuers responded shortly before 11 a.m. Jan. 22 to the Snowbowl Skiing Resort near Flagstaff, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Witnesses watched as the skier deviated from the Upper Ridge run and went “just outside a boundary line” before crashing into a tree, deputies said.

The Upper Ridge run is a black diamond trail, which is the “most difficult,” according to the Arizona Snowbowl website.

The ski patrol responded to the skier, who deputies said was seriously injured.

Paramedics were giving the skier medical attention when deputies arrived

The skier died after being taken to a first aid station, deputies said.

Anyone who goes out of bounds at the ski resort should have “very strong knowledge of backcountry travel and safety equipment in avalanche terrain,” according to the resort.

The skier’s name has not been released.
