A man accused of brutally beating his ex-girlfriend with a brick when she kicked him out of the house has now been sentenced in Virginia.

The woman survived, and 63-year-old Bobby Randall Bland has been ordered to serve 21 years in prison, the Virginia Beach Commonwealth Attorney’s Office said June 10.

McClatchy News reached out to his attorney June 11 and did not immediately receive a response.

In February, Bland pleaded guilty to malicious wounding, assault and battery of a family member and statutory burglary of building with the intent to commit rape, robbery, murder or arson, records show.

The guilty plea stems from an incident that happened in October.

At the time, Bland was living at his girlfriend’s apartment, officials said.

She evicted him Oct. 17, and six days later, she woke up in the night to discover Bland had broken through the sliding glass door of her bedroom with a brick, according to prosecutors.

She grabbed her phone and ran to the front of the apartment as Bland chased her, threatening to kill her, officials said.

As she ran through the front door, Bland is accused of hitting her in the head with the brick. Then he continued hitting her, at least 10 to 15 times, while yelling that he would kill her, officials said.

The woman managed to disarm him of the brick, but their fight continued until a neighbor heard their struggle and called 911, officials said.

The neighbor confronted Bland and held him at gunpoint until police got there, according to prosecutors.

When police arrived, they saw the woman “bleeding profusely from the head and found a chunk of bloody brick next to her,” officials said. “Bland’s hands were covered in blood.”

Bland said he believed the woman “got what she deserved,” according to prosecutors.

The woman had a brain bleed and needed staples in her head, but she survived the attack.

State sentencing guidelines recommended Bland serve no more than five years and 10 months in prison, according to the commonwealth attorney’s office. Despite this, a judge sentenced him to 21 years.

Virginia Beach is on the southeast coast of the state near the border of North Carolina.
