An administrator at a Texas college has been charged one year after the death of his 6-month-old son, Texas authorities say.

Dr. Emmitt Carter, the assistant dean of student success at Lone Star College-Tomball, was charged with murder, court records show.

“The defendant killed his six-month-old son by shaking and striking him,” according to court records filed Aug. 16 in Harris County.

As originally reported by KHOU, the charges allege Carter hit his son with a “blunt object,” and the boy died July 8, 2023. It’s unclear what led to charges being filed 13 months after the incident.

Carter has worked at Lone Star College for 10 years and in the education field for 18 years, the college says on its website.

McClatchy News reached out to the college Aug. 19 but did not immediately hear back.
