Driver opens fire on town, then hits and kills woman during chase, Iowa cops say
A woman opened fire on an Iowa town, shooting at people as she sped through the streets, police said.
Muscatine police said they tried to pull her over as she fired shots on Dec. 8, but she refused. A chase ensued and continued outside of the town, according to police.
Iowa State Patrol picked up the chase as 36-year-old Brittany Miles merged onto a highway into oncoming traffic, police said.
She slammed head-on into 27-year-old Olivia Alvarez and died on impact, according to a crash report by Iowa State Patrol.
First responders attempted to save Alvarez’s life, but she also died at the scene, the report said.
“Olivia had so much to look forward to; she was engaged and excitedly planning her wedding to the love of her life,” loved ones wrote in a GoFundMe.
Alvarez’s family and friends said she was just days away from picking out her wedding dress, according to the GoFundMe.
“Olivia was a shining light in the lives of all who knew her. She was positive, thoughtful, generous, and kind — always willing to lend a helping hand and bring joy to those around her. She had a beautiful spirit, and her smile was infectious,” according to the GoFundMe.
No one was injured in the shooting, and an officer had non-life-threatening injuries from a crash during the chase, police said. Officers are continuing to investigate.
Muscatine is about a 40-mile drive southeast from Iowa City.
