Lottery jackpot win leaves Virginia couple ‘hootin’ and hollerin’ in the living room’
A lottery player hit the jackpot — and she and her husband couldn’t contain themselves.
“We were both hootin’ and hollerin’ in the living room,” prize winner Christina Groves told the Virginia Lottery in a Dec. 13 news release.
The couple was bursting with joy after Groves tried her luck on a lottery ticket. She was at a Sheetz convenience store in Fredericksburg when she spent $30 to play the 100X the Money game, officials said.
It turns out, the scratch-off ticket was worth $300,000 — the second-highest prize in the game.
“It just kind of feels surreal,” said Groves, who works as a hairstylist.
Lottery officials didn’t reveal how much Groves kept after taxes but said she doesn’t know how she will spend her prize money. She lives in Colonial Beach, a roughly 70-mile drive northeast from Richmond.
It’s not the first time a lottery player has started screaming over their big prize. Another Virginia winner’s husband thought something was wrong when she had an outburst, McClatchy News reported in 2023.
