A man was killed in an attack by three dogs believed to be his own pets at a San Diego park, California police told news outlets.

The man was attacked while walking with his young son at Mesa Viking Park in Mira Mesa at about noon Friday, Dec. 13, San Diego police told KGTV.

The dogs appear to have belonged to the man, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Police officers broke up the attack by firing tasers at the dogs, KGTV reported.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries, police told KNSD. A second person who tried to save the man also was injured.

Before police arrived, bystanders tried to drive the dogs away with shovels and possibly a golf club, KSWB reported. The child with the man was not injured, the station said.

Humane Society officers captured all three dogs, KNSD reported.

The dogs were later euthanized with the permission of the co-owner, KNSD reported.

A nearby elementary school was briefly placed on lockdown, but the dogs did not make it onto the campus, KGTV said.

Mira Mesa is about a 15-mile drive north from downtown San Diego.
