An Illinois man is accused of shooting his sister-in-law after mistaking her for an intruder, news outlets reported, citing police.

Daniel Garcia, 52, of Schaumburg faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the Christmas Day shooting death of 50-year-old Kellie Barnett, WGN reported.

McClatchy News was unable to locate attorney information for Garcia.

Police responded shortly before 7:30 a.m. Dec. 25 to reports of a person shot and found Barnett with a gunshot wound to the torso, the outlet reported.

She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the Daily Herald reported.

Barnett was staying with her relatives for the night, according to the outlet.

Garcia told police he forgot his sister-in-law was staying at his home and shot her, thinking she was an intruder, WMAQ reported.

Detectives found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun on Garcia’s side of the bed, a spent cartridge underneath his pillow, and a fired bullet in the hallway, the outlet reported, citing police.

Cook County jail records show Garcia is being held without bond. He is due back in court Jan. 17.

Schaumburg is about a 30-mile drive northwest from Chicago.
