A Michigan man was arrested after officials say he used his 2-year-old son as a human shield during a police standoff.

On Jan. 12, the 30-year-old man assaulted the mother of his child and pointed a gun at her, according to a Jan. 14 news release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

The man then picked up his 2-year-old son and held him at gunpoint, officials said.

Clinton Township Police arrived at the apartment and the man barricaded himself inside a bedroom with the 2-year-old, according to prosecutors.

He then used the 2-year-old as a “human shield” while pointing a gun at police, officials said.

The man eventually surrendered to authorities and was arrested.

“The alleged actions of this individual are reprehensible. Such acts of violence are intolerable, and we will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law to protect these victims and prevent further harm,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.

McClatchy News is not naming the man to protect the identity of the child.

He is charged with seven counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, eight counts of felony firearm, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, child abuse and domestic violence. Officials said he was charged as a habitual fourth offender and given a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Clinton Township is about a 30-mile drive north of Detroit.
