Cops responding to a call about a pair of aggressive dogs ran the animals over, and shot one, to stop them from getting to a nearby school playground, Michigan police say.

On Thursday, Feb. 6, an elementary school resource officer contacted the Menominee Police Department for help regarding “two aggressive pit bulls” that were “at the playground barking at children aggressively,” the department said in a news release.

Police also received reports that someone in the area had been attacked, though it was later determined the dogs had chased the person but hadn’t bitten them. A second person was also charged by the dogs and jumped into the bed of a pickup truck to escape, police said.

Officers tried and failed to capture the dogs using poles and tasers, but resorted to more lethal options “as the situation escalated.”

The dogs turned their attention again to the elementary school and started to run toward the playground, according to the department.

“To prevent an immediate threat to the children, officers struck the dogs with a patrol vehicle and subsequently had to fatally shoot one of them,” police said.

One of the dogs, described as a “brown and white female pit bull,” was still loose and possibly injured, the department said, urging residents to be cautious and to call police if they see the dog.

“The safety of the community, especially our children, remains our top priority. We appreciate the cooperation of residents as we work to locate the remaining dog and ensure public safety,” police said.
