Woman wrecks during medical crisis, then another driver shoots at her, Florida cops say
A driver experiencing a medical emergency saw matters go from bad to worse when she crashed and another driver started shooting at her, according to Florida investigators.
The woman survived, and the shooter escaped, the Florida Highway Patrol reported in a Feb. 11 news release.
It happened around 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, on southbound Interstate 275, near Tampa.
“Troopers located a 63-year-old Lutz woman who had suffered a medical emergency and had lost control of her vehicle. The vehicle, a GMC Yukon, had departed the highway and collided with the 57 Milepost road sign,” the highway patrol said.
“Following that collision, the GMC returned to the travel lanes and collided with an unknown silver or white mid-sized sport utility vehicle. After this collision, the driver was shot at by an unknown assailant who fled the scene.”
Troopers found the woman “bleeding profusely” in her vehicle, and successfully stopped the flow to save her life.
She dodged the gunfire, but suffered cuts from flying window glass, investigators say.
“Troopers later discovered a bullet strike to the front driver’s side window with a departure path through the front windshield,” troopers reported.
“Portions of the expended round were located in the rear seat of the vehicle.”
Troopers are searching for “a silver or white 2009-2017 Chevrolet Equinox” in connection with the gunfire, officials said in a case update.
