A dog was trapped on a rocky ledge above high cliffs near a California highway, photos show.

The pup was trapped about 20 feet below the top of the Pigeon Cliffs on Highway 36, the Susanville Fire Department said in a Facebook post on Feb. 25.

Photos show the pup lying down on the ledge and looking up toward the top of the cliffs.

First responders realized they wouldn’t be able to rescue the dog with the people and equipment they had, so the agencies called the Susanville City Fire Department for help.

A firefighter was dropped down to the dog with a rope system, secured it into a rescue device and they were both lowered to the bottom of Pigeon Cliff, a video shows.

The Lassen County Sheriff’s Department then took the dog to the Lassen Veterinary Hospital, where staff determined it was not injured, the fire department said. The dog was then taken to the Lassen County Animal Shelter.

Several people in the comments wondered about the pup’s owners or whether it might have been a stray.

“I’m sure it was so scared,” someone said. “I wonder how he got there & how long he’s been there. I hope he finds a Good Loving Home or his owners that were missing him.”
