An 18-year-old man is accused of fatally shooting his father in the chest after an argument on Easter Sunday, police in New Mexico said.

Ricky Romero was arrested in the death of his dad and is facing a second-degree murder charge, New Mexico State Police said in an April 22 post on Facebook.

McClatchy News reached out to his attorney April 23 and was awaiting comment.

Officers were called to a home in Truchas at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday, April 20, after dispatchers “noted hearing at least one gunshot” on an open 911 call, police said.

Officers found Fernando Romero, 44, shot in the chest, according to police.

“Emergency medical services responded to the residence and attempted lifesaving measures,” but he died, police said.

Ricky Romero had “what appeared to be blood on his hand” and was detained, police said.

Investigators learned the father and son had been “involved in a verbal argument” and the son “armed himself with a handgun and fatally shot” the father, according to police, who said the case still is being investigated.

Truchas is about a 98-mile drive northeast from Albuquerque.
