14-year-old killed in Wisconsin shooting, police say. ‘He loved his family’

Police in Wisconsin are investigating after they say a shooting left a 14-year-old dead and a 16-year-old in critical condition, news outlets report.

Around 3:30 p.m. May 2, a 14-year-old and 16-year-old were taken to a hospital after police said they were injured in a shooting in Milwaukee/, according to WDJT.

The 14-year-old, who family later identified as Maurice Whiters, died at the hospital, according to WISN.

Maurice was a freshman in high school, the news outlet reported.

“He wanted to get drafted to the NFL and then cut hair. His oldest sister is in college and she gave him clippers so he could practice cutting hair,” his mom, Quintrell Smith, told WTMJ.

Maurice was a “kid that loved life, loved football, loved basketball and he loved everybody,” a GoFundMe page said.

A vigil was held in memory of Maurice, and family members said he was their protector, WTMJ reported.

“I’m going to miss his unconditional love,” Smith told the outlet. “He was very smart, very intelligent. He loved sports. He loved his family.”

The 16-year-old was last listed in critical condition, WDJT reported.
