A police officer faces a charge of driving under the influence causing injuries following an off-duty crash, California authorities reported.

Officers responded to a two-vehicle collision in San Francisco at 1:59 a.m. Saturday, May 17, police said in a news release.

Five people were injured in the crash and taken to hospitals, one with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers arrested the driver of one of the vehicles, Ryan Kwong, 28, of San Francisco, police said. Kwong recently entered field training as a San Francisco police officer.

“This incident was incredibly tragic, and my heart goes out to the injured victims,” Police Chief Bill Scott said in the release.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure justice is served in this case,” Scott said. “No one is above the law, and our officers know they are expected to obey the law, as well as our strict code of conduct, even while off duty.”

Police ask anyone with information to call 415-575-4444.
