Two kittens who were taken into a shelter in Illinois are now safe and sound in a foster home — but only after they made an impression on social media.

Meet Doe and Deer, two little ones who were found in an unfortunate place in an unfortunate way. Sick and scared, they were rescued by PAWS Chicago, but while they were safe, they sure didn’t feel like it.

“Doe and Deer were found under a porch, but luckily, they chose the porch next door to one of our local outdoor cat caretakers,” the shelter said in a June 18 Instagram post.

And along with the post, the shelter put up a video showing the babies in a crate, damp, shaking and hiding in the back of their crate, clinging to each other while trying to escape.

It was clear they were horrified of humans.

“It’s hard for kittens to survive outside, and these kids show it. They’re dehydrated, malnourished, and so, so scared of us big ole humans that they don’t know are here to help,” the shelter said.

Eventually, they were able to wrap the kittens up in towel burritos to get them dried off, with them hissing and mean mugging most of the time.

“We got them food, some fluids, and then their luck continued when one of our most experienced kitten fosters was dropping off her last set of kittens at the time they came in,” the shelter said. “She took one look at them giving their fierce little hisses at everyone and it was a done deal: she wanted to take them home for socialization.”
