Driver shot dead as he attacks man with bat in road rage incident, PA cops say
A road rage incident turned deadly when a man was shot as he attacked another driver with a metal bat, Pennsylvania officials said.
Video surveillance showed the two drivers — one in an Audi and the other in a Toyota Prius — driving in Allentown around 3:30 a.m. July 6, according to a news release from police and the Lehigh County district attorney.
The Audi “overtook” the Prius on the road, then forced it to pull over near the curb, officials said.
The driver of the Audi got out of his car and started to attack the driver and the Prius with a metal bat, authorities said. He struck the driver’s side door of the vehicle, according to officials.
The Prius driver pulled out a gun and shot the bat-wielding man, authorities said.
“The driver of the Audi stopped striking the Prius, moved away from the vehicle, and dropped the bat,” officials said in the news release.
He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, officials said. His identity was not released.
The Prius driver and passenger moved about one block from the scene and called authorities, officials said. He was detained, but no charges were filed against the driver, who was not identified, prosecutors said.
Officials said they are continuing to investigate.
Allentown is about a 65-mile drive northwest from Philadelphia.
