FBI Offers $50K Reward in National Guard Member's Murder

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of an alleged gang member in the slaying of a National Guardsman, FBI officials said Tuesday.

Joseph “Troubles” Matos, a suspected member of the Milwaukee Kings street gang, is wanted in connection to the fatal shooting of 19-year-old National Guard member Chrys Carvajal on July 3, 2021, FBI Chicago officials said.

Matos, 43, and a fellow suspected gang member, Gary “Gotti” Roberson, allegedly “randomly shot” Carvajal as the guardsman walked to his car following a party. Investigators believe the pair carried out the slaying for the purpose of “maintaining and increasing position” within the Milwaukee Kings street gang, CBS News reported, citing a May 2024 indictment.

Carvajal had just returned home following Army National Guard training prior to the slaying at the corner of Lockwood Avenue and Palmer Street in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin section.

“He was off serving and protecting our country, and for him to come home - and not even a month of him being home - you killed my brother, and now my family is broken,” Carvajal’s sister, Jennifer Ramirez, previously told CBS News.

Carvajal’s family had called on prosecutors to file charges in the case months after the slaying, but the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said there wasn’t enough evidence to do so at the time. Roberson was later arrested during an FBI raid in May 2024, CBS News reported.

An arrest warrant for Matos was issued in May 2024 after he was charged with murder-in-aid of racketeering and murder through the use of a firearm. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall, roughly 220 pounds and should be considered armed and dangerous, according to FBI officials.

The Illinois native also has several distinctive tattoos, including “M-Town Kings” on the right side of his neck, “1300” on the left side of his neck, “Move in Silence” on his right hand, “Trust No One” on his left hand, “MOST WANTED” on his stomach and “Jesus Christopher Matos” on his chest.

Carvajal, who was days away from his 20th birthday, had planned to become a police officer in Chicago, his sister said.

“That was one of his hopes and dreams,” she told WLS-TV. “He loved this city.”
