Sen. Mitch McConnell hospitalized, spokesman says

June 14 (UPI) -- Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning, a spokesman announced.

McConnell's team did not specify why he was hospitalized. It is the second time he has been admitted this year, following a hospitalization for flu-like symptoms in February.

"Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care," spokesman David Popp said.

McConnell was hospitalized for eight days in February.

McConnell has experienced several health issues over the past three years. In 2023, he appeared frozen and unresponsive at the podium on two occasions. He has had several falls resulting in a concussion and broken ribs and has needed a wheelchair during recovery.

McConnell's health has raised questions about his ability to continue serving in the Senate and whether he will finish out his term which ends at the end of the year.

McConnell was the Senate Republican leader from 2007 to 2025.

In February, McConnell announced that he will not seek another term in office. He has served in the Senate for 41 years.
