On a new episode of News & Observer politics podcast, Under the Dome, for the week of Feb. 13, 2023, host Dawn Vaughan brings you the latest on the new HBCU Caucus at the General Assembly.

The HBCU Caucus is formally launched, with members spotlighting North Carolina as the first state legislature in the country to have a bicameral (meaning both House and Senate), bipartisan HBCU Caucus. Caucus co-chairs are Rep. Zack Hawkins, a Durham Democrat; Rep. Jon Hardister, a Guilford County Republican; Sen. Gladys Robinson, a Guilford County Democrat; and Sen. Carl Ford, a Rowan County Republican.

Listen to what Robinson and Hardister said this past week about why the legislature needs an HBCU Caucus. Plus hear Vaughan’s interview with N.C. Central University’s Michael Page about what this means for NCCU, and what HBCUs mean to him.

“I feel like it’s a step in the right direction, particularly in African American History Month, because we’re always celebrating our achievements and past achievements, but it’s really time to look more progressively at the future,” Page said.

Headliner of the Week

Stayed tuned to the end for Headliner of the Week with Vaughan, politics editor Jordan Schrader and politics reporter Avi Bajpai. Their Headliner picks include other legislation that rippled outside the building to a city council meeting; one senator’s first floor speech; and the possible end to a campaign issue.
