Raleigh Mayoral Race

In the mayoral race, Dix Park Conservancy CEO Janet Cowell leads the fundraising race. She’s received more than 50 times the money of the next most contributed-to candidate, N.C. State University professor Terrance Ruth.

Cowell’s campaign raised more than $378,000 this year. About $30,000 of that was her own money. Between 2001 and 2009, Cowell served on the Raleigh City Council and state Senate. She was state treasurer from 2009 to 2016.

The incumbent mayor, Mary-Ann Baldwin, announced she would not seek reelection in April after receiving a cancer diagnosis. Aside from Cowell and Ruth, mortgage broker Paul Fitts, community advocate Eugene Myrick and pre-law student James Shaughnessy IV are running for Baldwin’s seat.

Current District C Councilmember Corey Branch withdrew from the mayoral race in mid-July to run for reelection in his current jurisdiction. His campaign has raised about $11,500 this year, leading the seven-candidate District C election.
