Under the Dome podcast: Get ready for the legislative session, inauguration
Start your week in North Carolina politics with our latest Under the Dome podcast, for the week of Jan. 6, 2025. Dawn Vaughan here, your podcast host and The News & Observer’s Capitol bureau chief.
On this episode, I’m joined by reporters Kyle Ingram and Korie Dean as we tell you what you need to know this week with the General Assembly and new governor beginning their work with ceremonial events.
The long legislative session starts on Wednesday, and all 170 lawmakers will be sworn in. We talk about what we are already seeing about how the legislature may interact with new Gov. Josh Stein.
The legislature, then under a Republican supermajority, recently took control of the State Board of Elections from the governor and gave it to the auditor. So we’ll be watching how the Democratic governor interacts with the Republican auditor, too. New State Auditor Dave Boliek was the first statewide official to comment on Stein’s round of executive orders dealing with Helene relief.
We also talk about the changes in leadership at the General Assembly.
Headliner of the Week
Stay tuned after the break for our picks for what’s in and what out, plus our Headliners of the Week. The topics range from public records to legislative time to Durham naming a street after former Mayor Bill Bell.
