US Attorney General posts on X after talking with sister of slain NC deputy. What she said.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi spoke with the sister of the late Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd on Tuesday night, she announced in an X post.
Byrd was fatally shot in southeastern Wake County in August 2022. His body was discovered in the grass next to his SUV in the early morning hours of Aug. 12. Byrd’s K-9 partner, Sasha, was found safe in the vehicle, which he’d parked on Battle Bridge Road.
Brothers Arturo Marin-Sotelo, 31, and Alder Marin-Sotelo, 28, are charged with murder in Byrd’s death, The News & Observer previously reported.
The pair were arrested five days after the killing, and Alder Marin-Sotelo was extradited from Mexico last week after escaping from jail in Virginia in 2023.
The brothers are awaiting trial, and their attorneys hope to sever their cases so they can be tried separately. A hearing on that motion is expected to be held in late March or early April, after Alder is returned to Wake County.
Bondi and Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove spoke with Mignon Byrd, Ned Byrd’s sister, Tuesday evening, according to Bondi’s post on X.
“It was my honor to learn more about Deputy Byrd and to express my condolences to his amazing sister,” Bondi wrote. “President Trump and I are committed to prosecuting criminals who kill our law enforcement agents.”
Bondi noted in her post that Alder Marin-Sotelo had illegally entered the United States from his native Mexico.
The post had 302,200 views as of noon Wednesday.
