What the latest NC Supreme Court election ruling means for voters
North Carolina is getting closer to a resolution in the N.C. Supreme Court case between Allison Riggs and Jefferson Griffin.
Happy Tuesday. I’m Dawn Vaughan, Capitol bureau chief and host of the Under the Dome podcast. This newsletter is a preview of the new podcast, during which we talk extensively about the latest in the race between Riggs, who is the Democratic incumbent on the court, and Griffin, the Republican candidate and a Court of Appeals judge. I’m joined by politics reporters Kyle Ingram and Avi Bajpai.
As Ingram reported on Friday, the N.C. Supreme Court partially ruled against Griffin’s effort to throw out 65,000 ballots in the 2024 election — but left open the possibility for thousands of votes to be discarded.
Ingram explains what this means for voters, for the process and when we might expect a final resolution.
After the break, we talk about another court case that Ingram covered on Monday about the composition of the State Board of Elections.
And we also let you know what to expect at the General Assembly this week in addition to the budget, including legislation about diversity, equity and inclusion, immigration and cryptocurrency. Plus, what Republicans and Democrats say about the first 100 days of Democratic Gov. Josh Stein.
Headliner of the Week
Stay tuned to the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week. Ingram and Bajpai talk about Ingram’s new pet, and I suspend the rules to make my Headliner something we already mentioned earlier in the podcast: the Senate budget. We’ll have much more on the budget in next week’s podcast.
