Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman will not seek reelection, she announced Thursday.

Freeman, who has served as district attorney since 2014, will step down when her term ends in December 2026, according to an email to her supporters.

“It has been a tremendous honor to represent the citizens of our county, but I believe it is time to find new ways to serve the community and give others the opportunity to bring a new energy and vision to the critical role of Wake County District Attorney,” Freeman wrote.

Freeman was most recently reelected in 2022, garnering 62% of votes compared to her Republican challenger.

Before becoming district attorney, Freeman previously worked as an assistant district attorney, an assistant state attorney general and the Wake County clerk of court, The News & Observer previously reported. In her last campaign, Freeman cited her work on diversion programs for those struggling with substance use and mental health issues as point of pride.

In her announcement, she said she will “continue to work hard to keep our county safe, and to continue to honor your confidence” through 2026.

She has not said what she plans to do next.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
