The House has passed major bills in the past few weeks. Both Houses — the U.S. House and the North Carolina House. And both houses are now going to each have to deal with their upper chamber: the Senate.

Good morning and welcome to The News & Observer’s Under the Dome newsletter. I’m Capitol Bureau Chief Dawn Vaughan.

Our newsletter on Tuesdays is a preview of the new episode of our Under the Dome podcast that posted this morning on all podcast platforms. I’m joined by our Washington correspondent Danielle Battaglia to talk about what’s going on in the nation’s capital, and Capitol.

The U.S. House passed what President Donald Trump coined the Big Beautiful Bill, and several aspects of the legislation impact North Carolina. We talk about Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, clean energy tax credits and what the “woke tax” is for two private universities here.

Battaglia explains what we might see with North Carolina’s two senators as the bill moves through the Senate: Republican Sens. Thom Tillis and Ted Budd.

Plus, where we are in the General Assembly now that the state House’s budget bill was passed before their weeklong Memorial Day break.

Stay tuned to the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week.
