Veto override chances at the NCGA | Under the Dome podcast
The North Carolina General Assembly is back, and today will be an incredibly busy day of veto override votes in both the House and the Senate.
Good morning and welcome to the Under the Dome newsletter. On Tuesdays, our newsletter is a preview of our new Under the Dome podcast that dropped this morning. I’m Dawn Vaughan, Capitol bureau chief and host of Under the Dome. On this latest episode, I’m joined by my politics team colleagues Avi Bajpai and Ronni Butts.
The biggest news, that we know of, so far this week at the Legislative Building will be what vetoes from Democratic Gov. Josh Stein will be successfully overridden by Republicans. Senate Republicans have a veto-proof supermajority, so if all senators are in the chamber, they can override a Stein veto.
In the House, Republicans need at least one Democrat to vote with them or enough people absent to achieve the three-fifths majority required to override a veto. If both the House and Senate override Stein’s veto, the bill becomes law.
We break down what the major bills are, including two about immigration, two about guns, one about gender and three about diversity, equity and inclusion, known as DEI.
Plus what you need to know about the chances of bills being overridden, and what else could happen this week at the legislature, including an elections bill and private school voucher tax breaks.
Stay tuned to the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week.
